![]() I suppose better gaming performance should be possible by plugging the external screen to the egpu directly but in my case, for csgo (which is the only game I play regularly), performance is worse. Other games that are working fine that I tested are Tricky Towers and Witcher III with proton 4 on steam. It is just enough RAM to run disco-diffusion localy ( ) and can speed up training of some small models a lot by putting the whole dataset on the GPU (especially usefull since transfer speeds are probably slower because it's an egpu). Machine Learning with cuda worked perfectly right away (pytorch). However, using nvidia-prime instead (the installation steps I gave are for this setup) gave the best feel/performance for csgo with generally very consistent FPS ~100, with the added benefit of hot plug/unplug capabilities and no screen tearing. Performance was the same whether I plugged the screen into the external gpu or through the laptop. Maybe I should have enabled Prime Synchronization instead ( ). I also had to enable some setting in nvidia-settings to prevent screen tearing (don't remember what setting it was). Fps were good ~100 generally but dropping to ~40 sometimes and generally it felt worse than the integrated graphics (although with the egpu I could play on 2k resulting rather than the minimum csgo resolution). I also tried rendering everything with the discrete gpu by default (with the ` egpu-switcher` script in the AUR repos) but csgo seemed stuttery with this setup. Hot plug/unplug are fully supported with this setup. I can run a specific game/app on the egpu instead with `prime-run $app`. If you follow the guide and ensure your command line session is pointed at the folder containing the aforementioned batch file (mine wasn't initially and I received an error message very quickly), hopefully it works for you too (after a while!).This setup uses integrated graphics to render the desktop and applications by default. I was certain it had just encountered a silent error.įor future seekers, refer to the Deployment Guide provided in the linked zip file, specifically the Deployment chapter that mentions the setup_vantage.bat file. Most of the time the process was sitting on 0% CPU utilisation according to Task Manager with only very occasional, very small spikes in usage. I say "actually" because it took around 30 minutes for the installation to complete. ![]() I have a Thinkpad T470 that I just reinstalled Windows 10 Pro 20H2 on, and wanted a way to install Vantage (it has the very important feature of "Battery Charge Threshold") without the laptop having internet connectivity, and the mentioned approach actually worked. A can of compressed air may be useful too, and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds are good for cleaning, but not on the screen. The only tools you need for servicing a ThinkPad are a set of small screwdrivers and a nylon spudger (for taking the screen and keyboard bezels off), and possibly a pair of tweezers. Corporate bulk purchasers don't usually go for it. Not only will it have better brightness, colour, contrast and viewing angles - you will most probably more than make up the investment when selling it. When buying a new ThinkPad, consider taking the IPS screen option if possible, as it doesn't cost much. When buying a used ThinkPad, remember to check that the BIOS is not locked with a supervisor's password and that Computrace is not enabled and activated.
